Nabusímake from Valledupar: How to Visit the Spiritual Heart of the Sierra Nevada
Nabusímake is one of the most sacred and least-visited places in Colombia — the ancestral home of the Arhuaco people, nestled in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta at 1,800 meters above sea level. Few travelers know it is reachable as a 1-2 day excursion from Valledupar. If you seek deep, authentic, and responsible cultural tourism, this may be the most unique experience the north of Colombia has to offer.

What Is Nabusímake?
Nabusímake is the sacred territory of the Arhuaco (also called Ika) people, one of the most preserved indigenous communities in the Americas. Located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, this territory is the spiritual and political center of the Arhuaco nation, home to approximately 300 to 500 families who live according to their ancestral customs.
The most iconic image of the Arhuaco people is that of men dressed in white robes with woven mochilas over their shoulders and the distinctive conical hat (known as tutusoma). Adult men carry the poporo — a small gourd used for ceremonial lime — as a symbol of spiritual maturity. This is a living culture, not a tourist recreation.
The community produces handwoven mochila bags, cacao, and other products sold through cooperatives. Access to the territory is regulated by the Organización Indígena Arhuaca (OIA) — it is not a place you can simply show up to. Visits require advance authorization from the Cabildo Gobernador, the community's highest political authority.
For cultural travelers, Nabusímake represents an extraordinary opportunity: to witness firsthand an indigenous cosmovision that has endured intact since before the Spanish conquest. A visit to Nabusímake is not a conventional tourism day — it is an immersion into another way of understanding the world and nature.
How to Visit Nabusímake: Step-by-Step Logistics
Visiting Nabusímake requires planning and respect. There is no room for improvisation — the authorization process takes time and the visit has clear rules.
Contact the OIA well in advance
Reach out to the Organización Indígena Arhuaca (OIA) or an authorized Valledupar tour operator months ahead. Visits are limited to approximately 20-30 people per week.
Obtain written authorization
The Cabildo Gobernador of Nabusímake must issue written permission. Without this document, you will not be allowed to enter the territory. The process can take weeks.
Depart Valledupar early
Leave between 5:00 and 6:00 AM. The drive is 2-3 hours through mountain roads ascending the Sierra Nevada. During the rainy season, roads can become challenging.
Arrive with a local guide
It is mandatory to travel with an authorized guide who speaks Ika (the Arhuaco language) and Spanish. Never attempt to reach the territory alone — it is disrespectful and also dangerous.
Respect all rules
Do not photograph without explicit permission, bring no alcohol or drugs, and dress modestly (no shorts or revealing clothing). Always follow your guide's instructions.
Visit lasts 4 to 6 hours
Most visitors spend 4 to 6 hours in the community. Overnight stays are not permitted for most external visitors. Return to Valledupar before sunset.
Visit Rules — Respect Is Mandatory
Nabusímake is not a theme park or a conventional tourist destination. It is the sacred home of a real community. Their code of conduct is non-negotiable.
- Request authorization from the OIA well in advance
- Do not photograph inside the community without explicit permission
- Alcohol, drugs, and substances are strictly prohibited
- Modest dress is mandatory — no shorts, no revealing clothing
- Do not touch or handle cultural objects or artifacts
- Do not enter sacred spaces (mambe circles, ceremonial areas)
- Bring a local guide who speaks Ika and knows the protocol
- Leave No Trace — pack all your waste out of the territory
Best Time to Visit
Dry season (Dec–Apr)
The best time for road access. Drier and safer mountain roads in the Sierra Nevada. Ideal for planning the visit.
Rainy season (Jun–Sep)
Some rainfall can make mountain roads more difficult. It is still possible to visit — always check current road conditions with your operator.
Climate year-round
At 1,800 m, Nabusímake has cool mountain weather: 16–24 °C. A sharp contrast with Valledupar's heat (32–38 °C). Always bring a jacket.
Context: The Sierra Nevada and the Arhuaco People
To get the most out of the visit, it helps to understand who the Arhuacos are and what makes the Sierra Nevada so significant.
Arhuaco (Ika) People
One of four indigenous groups of the Sierra Nevada (alongside Kogui, Wiwa, and Kankuamo). The Arhuacos are the most politically engaged and participate in the Colombian Congress while keeping their ancestral culture alive.
Mochila Arhuaca
The iconic hand-woven bags are a symbol of indigenous identity and UNESCO-recognized heritage. Buy directly from the community cooperative to fairly support the artisans.
Sacred Ecology
The Arhuaco consider themselves 'Elder Brothers' with a spiritual responsibility to maintain the planet's ecological balance. Every element of nature holds deep spiritual significance.
Lost City Connection
The 'Lost City' (Teyuna) is in the same Sierra Nevada range. Nabusímake is spiritually connected but far more accessible and significantly less touristic than the Teyuna trekking route.
